RICHMOND, VA- The Chowan University women's basketball team's season came to an end on Friday afternoon with an 80-70 loss to California University of Pennsylvania in the opening round of play at the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament. The Hawks end the year with a 20-9 overall record while the Vulcans advance to semifinal play with a 25-4 mark.ncaa bkb logo

Alisha Mobley led all players in the game with 25 points. Jordan Payne notched 19 points and seven rebounds (three offensive, four defensive) while Jada Lee added 13 points and 13 rebounds (seven offensive, six defensive).

Head Coach Patrick Mashuda noted, "I thought today was a great effort by both teams. Today's game featured two teams out there battling and playing the game the way it's supposed to be played. I'm so proud of the effort of our team; this has been such a special season. I have no doubt both teams left it all out there on the court."

The Vulcans had five player score double-digit points in the win led by Shatara Parsons with 18 points and nine rebounds (seven offensive, two defensive). Seairra Barrett and Precious Martin both notched 16 points for Cal (PA) while Miki Glenn added 14 points in the victory. Morgan Jennings scored 11 points over the course of the contest.

Mobley opened the contest with a bucket for Chowan before the Vulcans responded with eight unanswered points to leave the Hawks trailing 8-2 with 7:23 on the clock in the first quarter. Mobley added two free throws at the 7:10 mark to end the scoring drought for the Chowan Blue and White. Barrett's layup on the Vulcan's next possession gave Cal (PA) a 10-4 advantage. Elisia Diggs answered with a three-pointer for the Hawks to pull Chowan within striking distance.

Back-to-back buckets by Parsons pushed the Vulcans ahead 14-7. Mobley's free throw and layup made the score 14-10 with 4:31 remaining in the first quarter. The Hawks and Vulcans exchanged baskets down the final stretch of the first quarter before a deep-three pointer by Jennings for Cal (PA) left Chowan trailing 21-14 with 1:50 on the clock. The Vulcans continued to build on the momentum and carried a 29-19 lead into the start of the second quarter.

The momentum shifted in favor of the Hawks after the first quarter. Mobley opened the second quarter with two free throws to cut the deficit to eight points (29-21). With the Vulcans holding a 31-23 lead at the 8:46 mark, layups by Payne and Lee made the score 31-26 with 8:17 on the clock. After Paige Wright's three-pointer for the Vulcans, Mobley's three-pointer followed by layups by Payne and Lee left the Cal (PA) clinging to a 34-33 lead.

The Hawks and Vulcans exchanged baskets down the final stretch of the second quarter before Danielle Weldon's layup at the 4:00 mark gave the Hawks a 39-38 edge. Jordan added a bucket on Chowan's next possession to push the Hawks ahead 41-38 with 3:29 left to play. The Hawks led by as many as six points (47-41) after a layup by Weldon and headed into halftime with a 47-43 advantage.

Mobley's layup at the start of the third quarter gave Chowan a 49-43 lead. Down but not out the Vulcans orchestrated a 6-0 run to knot the score 49-49 at the 7:19 mark. Mobley's layup on Chowan's next possession restored the advantage to the Hawks. Chowan held on to the lead until Barrett's bucket with 3:52 on the clock allowed Cal (PA) to take a 66-65 lead. The Hawks and Vulcans matched each other basket for basket with the Hawks knotting the score 60-60 using Payne's free throw. Martin's layup for the Vulcans gave Cal (PA) a 62-60 lead heading into the final ten minutes of play.

Parsons' free throw and Martin's layup at the start of the fourth quarter lifted the Vulcans 65-60 over the Hawks with 8:05 left in the game. Chowan refused to back down and chipped away at the deficit over the final minutes of play. Trailing 68-61, a layup by Mobley followed by back-to-back buckets by Payne put the Hawks back within striking distance (68-67).

Cal (PA) answered with a 6-0 run to pull away 74-67 with 2:05 remaining in the contest. The Vulcans took advantage of free throws down the final stretch of the fourth quarter to secure the 80-70 victory.

Chowan ended the 2015-16 season with the most wins in program history (20) and reaching the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament for the first time. Mobley, the Hawks' lone senior, ends her career as Chowan's fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,219 career points. She played three seasons wearing the Chowan Blue and White and earned All-CIAA honors all three years.
