SIAC Recap

Morehouse College won its first opening season game since 2011 Saturday, September 5th by beating the Tigers of Edward Waters College 51-7 and in the process, cutting themselves a few new paths in the school’s football history.

It was the second largest margin of victory (44 points) since the beginning of the eight year reign of Atlanta native and head coach Richard Freeman. Only a 55-7 win over Kentucky State in 2012 beats out the September 5th scoring margin. A fumble recovery touchdown by Edward Waters late in the fourth quarter precluded Morehouse’s second shutout since they blanked visiting Lincoln University of Missouri 38-0 in 2009.

Oddly, the lopsided win was the first loss in three games for Edward Waters, now coached by former Bethune-Cookman pilot Alvin Wyatt. They opened the 2015 season with its own brand of lop side, 76-7, over the University of Faith and then 57-8 over the University of God’s Chosen Disciples from Raeford North Carolina.

Speaking with INSIDE after the contest, Wyatt said the absence of their first string quarterback injured in the Disciples game (he didn’t make the trip to Atlanta) and the performance of the Tiger defense were the keys to the blowout. “I just didn’t like the way the defense asserted themselves tonight. We now have to return to the drawing board and get better. “

`Morehouse head coach Richard Freeman, meanwhile, was happy with the overall performance of his team and especially his offensive line. “We had to replace four guys that played for us last year and were four year starters. It was good having those new guys step up and play. But we really have to improve the passing game and become a five step drop-back passing team. That why I pulled back some and didn’t pass so much”. mhc qb mongavious johnsonJohnsonStarter Mongavious Johnson wound up completing 5 of his 12 passing attempts for 94 yards and threw one touchdown, a 50 yarder to junior Don Cox just 16 seconds before the half. Morehouse’s eight scoring plays included two interceptions, one in the first quarter, another in the second and a blocked punt in the Edward Waters end zone just 1:06 into the third quarter.
Edward Waters will be in the metro Atlanta area again this weekend as guests of Kennesaw State while Morehouse takes to the road to face the University of Arkansas–Pine Bluff (UAPB) .

CAU’s defensive eleven played well and managed to block two attempted field goals, Their leading tackler, senior defensive back Josh Tate, managed seven tackles, six of them solo shots, blocked three kicking attempts and intercepted a pass………
