HBCU GRAD NEW A.D. FOR ATLANTA PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Jasper Jules, a graduate of Clark-Atlanta University, is now running sports for the Atlanta Public School system as its new athletic director. Jules, a native Atlantan and graduate of DM Therrell High School, has hit the ground running since getting the appointment several months ago after former Athletic Director Jeff Baggs retired.aps ad jasper julesJules

“I didn’t hesitate when I was offered the job, “Jules told INSIDE, “I eat, sleep and breathe high school sports. I’m an APS product . It was a natural progression for me.”

Among the first projects he has tackled was the city’s first grid classic, featuring four games and eight schools, four of them APS teams, including Mays High School, which came to within one game of capturing the Georgia state championship. It would have been the first for an inner city school since Southwest High (now a middle school named for the late Jean Childs Young, wife of former Atlanta mayor and UN Ambassador Andrew Young) won all the marbles 42 years ago.

Retired Atlanta minister Dr. Gerald Durley, a graduate and former All-American basketball star for Tennessee State University in the early 1960s, is now focusing a lot of his attention on the environment.gerald durleyDurley

“I think this will be a major civil rights issue as the 21st century matures,” he told this columnist. .”We are seeing the impact in our own communities. When kids can’t go out and play because of asthma and bad air, that is a civil rights issue. At one time, I too was indifferent to it. But I’ve had a change of heart.” In July, Durley was one of 12 honored by the White House as “champions of change” for efforts in helping protect our environment”.

lee elderElderWhile many of us celebrate the passing of the voting rights act 50 years ago and the carnage that same year on the Edmund Pettus bridge in Selma, Alabama, known more popularly as Bloody Sunday which helped push the legislation through congress, another civil rights breakthrough took place in neighboring Georgia. In the spring of the same year, golfer Lee Elder stepped up on the first tee at the Augusta National golf course and stuck another knife in Jim Crow by becoming the first of the race to play in the prestigious and heretofore snow-white Masters Golf tournament. The road to Augusta was paved with land mines that some cigar-chumping, tobacco spewing bigots set out to destroy the determined Elder. He fought through those battles virtually alone but with the help of his wife Rose persevered and made it to the Richmond county course. Much later, the Masters received its first black victor in Tiger Woods. I recall after the final hole and confirmation,he walked over and hugged Elder.

‘Nuff said.

XTRA POINTS: Lane College now has new football lockers to go along with their new locker room. A local church in Jackson, Tennessee, Fellowship Bible Church joined some of Lane’s players and spent part of their summer assembling over 100 lockers.

Head Coach Derrick Burroughs said the new facilities will definitely help improve recruiting…

The man that Burroughs replaced as head coach, Malik Hoskins,is reportedly still with the staff as offensive coordinator…..albn art dunningDunning

You learn something new every day. Albany State interim President Art Dunning is a history maker. Back in 1967, he and four other “brothers” walked on to the football practice field at the University of Alabama during spring drills and became the first to ever do so. Did they make the roster? Unfortunately no, but they definitely made a statement. Four years later, Wilbur Jackson became the first African-American to receive a U of A scholarship and afterward John Mitchell, a junior college transfer, became the first of the race to don a Crimson Tide jersey during a regular season game…….

The marching Ram band of Albany State University is conducting a $260,000 fundraising effort for a trip to march in the 2016 Tournament of Roses parade. They have set up a web site (http://www.gofundme.com/RamsintheRoses) and are aiming at raising $50,000 of that money by September 1……..

albany state bandAlbany State BandA documentary on the life and times of former Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson (Morehouse, North Carolina Central)  is in the works. His son, Maynard III tells INSIDE filming begins in September. Jackson was the first black mayor of a major city in the south and stood his ground in demanding justice for "Us" socially and in the business world......

A last note: RIP to Brother Julian Bond-friend and source (on and off the record).
